If you fancy saucy, intense fantasy action, HBO’s Game of Thrones goes where Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson feared to tread; heaving barbarian chests and eager concubines coupled with visceral, gut-wrenching visuals – the show’s as rough as the Northern Ireland countryside it’s largely shot in. And like most HBO shows, it’s all about the storytelling. Based on author George R. R. Martin’s bestselling novels, the show resembles other HBO series, such as The Sopranos and Boardwalk Empire when it comes to unification and takeovers. Except here, the action comes from sword-wielding medieval houses; and toss away any notion of heroes or villains – as one character aptly puts it, “When you play the Game of Thrones, you win or you die.”
Here’s what we’re looking forward to in Season 2 of Game Of Thrones:
1. The arrival of Stannis Baratheon (Stephen Dillane), the former king’s ruthless younger brother and tactical genius, who lays claim to the throne.
2. Things take a turn for Tyrion Lannister when he’s appointed Acting Hand of the King.
3. Brutal Youth Sadistic and cowardly Joffrey Baratheon (Jack Gleeson), barely out of puberty, holds the Iron Throne. But will his grip last?
4. Yes, there will be dragons. Expect grand-scale destruction and even more of a fantastic bent as Dothraki Queen Daenerys Targaryen unleashes hell. We learn that her dragon-blood heritage allows her to shoot fire in Season 2
