Boardwalk Empire

The Season 3 finale premieres Sunday December 2 on HBO Canada. Season 3 will be available until the end of February 2013 at HBO Canada On Demand and

With the end of season 3 almost upon us, it’s time for Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi) to take back his beloved Atlantic City in episode 12. He may have been driven out of town a bit too easily by the cocky psychopath Gyp Rosetti (Bobby Cannavale) but what’s the betting that Gyp will meet an appropriately bad end with a collar round his neck? We’ve certainly enjoyed plenty of auto-erotic asphyxiation foreshadowing this season.

Jimmy’s departure at the end of season 2 left a vacuum in season 3, for sure, but the cleverly cast Cannavale has managed to fill a void, not to mention adding a spot of sexual titillation in the absence of Jimmy’s oedipal relationship with his mother, Gillian (Gretchen Mol). Having said that, madam Gillian didn’t waste much time replacing her son with a Jimmy-lookalike lover (whom she even named James in her dead son’s honour).

Gillian’s best little whorehouse storyline has certainly provided a fun distraction this season. It’s remarkable that the dangerously sexy Gretchen Mol has been given a chance to stick around for as long as she has, given that almost everyone ends up with a bullet in the brain sooner or later, or at least a dinner fork embedded in their face.

One of the season’s best exits was a 4:00am postal delivery, uncrated like a Christmas gift to reveal the murdered corpse of Margaret’s secret lover (who miraculously managed to survive almost two whole seasons). At least he wasn’t buried up to the neck at the beach and walloped over the head with a shovel (as happens from time to time in these parts).

Anyone can confidently go around sticking knives into people willy-nilly in Boardwalk Empire without fear of any sort of legal repercussion. Atlantic City in the 1920s really was the Wild Wild East, apparently.

So, as Season 3 whips up the pace toward an inevitably bloody Gyp-Nucky showdown, we ponder whether Al Copone will end up saving Nucky’s neck and carve out a slice of Atlantic City for himself and whether or not Nelson Van Alden will ever return from his lengthy sentence as a door-to-door salesman in the Siberian midwest. As bootlegger George Remus would say, “Remus finds it all very odd.” Remus is from Cincinnati.

Catch up with the whole of Season 3 on demand until the end of February 2013.
