Chael Sonnen is the PT Barnum of mixed martial arts. He talked his way into two title fights with middleweight champ Anderson Silva, and now he has convinced the UFC to give him a crack at light heavyweight champ Jon Jones. Their upcoming clash in the main event at UFC 159 has been heavily hyped – mostly by Sonnen – on the most recent season of the reality series The Ultimate Fighter, which saw Jones and Sonnen serve as opposing coaches.
Whether you believe Sonnen deserves the title shot or not, the ground ’n’ pound specialist is more game for a gunfight than just about any fighter in the UFC. He stepped up to face Jones when Jones’s original opponent, Dan Henderson, got injured and no one else was willing to fight on short notice. And while he lost to Silva both times, he put more of a beating on the sport’s greatest fighter than anyone Silva has ever faced. Doing the same to the larger, faster and flashier Jones is another story. Jones has only lost once in 18 fights – and that was only because he was disqualified for illegal elbow strikes.
The rest of the main card isn’t too shabby, either. Divisive Brit Michael Bisping will face Alan Belcher, who’s best known for the worst Johnny Cash tattoo ever (which, until it was removed recently, looked like the love child of Kim Jong-un and Wayne Newton). Belcher might not be done with the bad ink, as he has promised to get the Union Jack tattooed on his chest if Bisping beats him in the first round.
A little earlier on the card, fan favourite Roy ‘Big Country’ Nelson will look to tattoo kickboxer Cheick Kongo while All-American wrestler Phil Davis throws down with Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Vinny Magalhães.
