Not much can compare with the ominous and nerve- racking opening to this harrowing tale. A couple and their three children are celebrating Christmas at a resort in Thailand in 2004 when the area is struck by one of the most devastating tsunamis ever recorded. That real event killed more than 230,000 people.
The husband (Ewan McGregor) is in their hotel room with two of the children while his wife (Naomi Watts) is outdoors with their eldest son. Separated by the ferocious tidal wave, the family desperately struggles to survive and be reunited. The actors spent a month filming in the water, while the special effects required for the unforgettable 10-minute opening sequence took six companies a full year to create.
The film has a relentless and seething energy, a tense and unforgettable portrait of survival, bravery and compassion. Watts was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar for this physically demanding and emo- tionally draining role.
