Add this to your calendars, sports fans: on July 18, Sportsnet magazine is releasing a special themed issue, “The Beauty of Sport,” featuring stunning, original photos of 28 Canadian athletes, including NHL superstars, Olympians, extreme athletes and more.
“This issue explores something most of us understand but rarely acknowledge: athletes are beautiful,” says Steve Maich, Sportsnet’s editor-in-chief and publisher. “A big part of what makes sports so appealing is that we’re watching young men and women in peak physical condition doing the [seemingly] impossible. They are, in a sense, superhuman.”
Sports fans will be floored by the gorgeous shots of elite athletes such as kayaker Adam van Koeverden, ice dancer Tessa Virtue, bobsledder Kallie Humphries, national-team soccer player Kaylyn Kyle, Toronto Maple Leafs left-winger Joffrey Lupul and Calgary Stampeders running back Jon Cornish.
“Since Sportsnet launched two years ago, people have been asking if we’ll do a swimsuit issue, like Sports Illustrated, or a body issue, like ESPN,” says Maich. Instead, his team wanted to celebrate the beauty that attracts all of us to sport, while remaining rooted in athletics. “Going in, I wasn’t sure if Canadian athletes would support the idea,” admits Maich, “but everyone we approached was excited and more than willing to take part.”
The result, he says, is “markedly different from anything else out there.”
