Connected Rogers

N.O.V.A. 3

The latest entry in Gameloft’s popular sci-fi series delivers a level of depth and visual sophistication never seen before in a first-person shooter made for phones and tablets.

Its lengthy, story-driven, single-player campaign is set in beautifully detailed human and alien environments, from an urban maze filled with fallen skyscrapers to an exotic extraterrestrial ship. Dramatic sequences in which players pilot mechs (combat vehicles) through alien hordes and battle their way across the Golden Gate Bridge are both exciting and memorable.

We’re also given a surprisingly diverse multiplayer experience, including a half-dozen classic modes – such as the always-popular capture-the-flag and fun-for-a-lark “instagib” game types – that play out on six different maps. Addictive achievements and comprehensive stat tracking sweeten the pot.

Greasing space invaders with great big guns on a Galaxy S III or iPad just doesn’t get much better than N.O.V.A. 3.

Top 3 N.O.V.A. 3 Tips

Master the pistol. Bullet sprayers will find ammunition for the more powerful weapons a bit scarce, but your handy handgun comes with a limitless supply of alien-ending rounds.

Jump into your pal’s jeep. Riding shotgun takes on a whole new meaning when you’re manning a massive machine gun to easily mow down baddies.

Don’t use real-world money on virtual gear. It may pave a shorter path to victory, but it’s much less satisfying than earning upgrades the old-fashioned way: by playing the game.

The Wild West meets the supernatural in this glossy gunslinger. Players take on the role of Buck Crosshaw, a killer making his way through the hazy Arizona desert. However, he soon realizes that bandits and the long arm of the law are the least of his concerns. Turns out the frontier is filled with foes of a more, er, undead nature. Dozens of missions provide players with a steady stream of context-driven objectives. Completionists, meanwhile, will need to saddle up and ride hard to unlock all of the game’s collectible horses, weapons and duds.

Asphalt 7: Heat

The popular and prolific racing series hits the tarmac for a seventh time, upping the stakes in both content and graphics. Car connoisseurs will drool over 60 authentically modeled machines (think: Aston Martin, Audi and even the legendary DeLorean), while speed freaks will get their high-octane fix racing on 15 new tracks in cities across the globe, from Rio to Paris. Enjoy super-responsive controls and plenty of challenges. Share and compare your achievements with your speed-loving friends via the Asphalt Tracker.
