Got something unique to sell? Etsy is the place to do it. The online retailer is home to more than 900,000 independent shops offering one-of-a-kind or handmade jewelry, art, clothing, toys and more. But, with so many sellers, how can you stand out? By following these six retailing rules, that’s how.
Rule 1: Sell Exceptional Stuff
To truly stand out, you have to sell goods that are unique to the Etsy marketplace. Research stores selling similar items, and then find a way to differentiate yours from theirs. Before going to market, ensure your wares are well-designed and well-crafted. After all, the quickest way to build a good reputation and grow sales is through word-of-mouth praise from happy customers.
Rule 2: Post Sharp, Inviting Product Photos
Etsy allows you to post up to five images per listing. Use all five spots to post pictures of your item from different angles, both inside and out of its packaging. Photos should be well lit, composed and in focus. Find some truly inspired shots from other sites and perhaps mimic see if you can mimic their composition.
Rule 3: Write Captivating Product Descriptions
Use brief paragraphs and bullet points to list details such as materials, size and how the item was made. Consider including testimonials. And don’t be shy – let your personality show!
Rule 4: Practise Good SEO
Etsy shoppers find sellers through title keywords and tags. How quickly you come up in the search results depends on “search engine optimization” (SEO). By using the proper keywords and tags (such as “necklace” or “silver” or “red”), your store will be easier to find, both within Etsy and through general search engines such as Google.
Rule 5: Do Some Marketing
No one will buy from you if they don’t know you’re there. Promote your shop through blogs, social media, giveaways, newsletters and trade shows, and try to get as much press coverage as you can.
Rule 6: Advertise
Whether on blogs, websites, Google AdWords, in newspapers or just by putting up flyers, advertising (just like marketing) is the best way to get people to know about your store. Also consider Etsy search ads, whereby you can pay to have your items appear at the top of Etsy search results.
